USA TODAY: It’s Massiv: Ready to ride the world’s tallest water coaster?

By |2016-07-28T14:21:36+00:00July 28th, 2016|In the News|

By: Arthur Levine, Special for USA TODAY

Everything is bigger in Texas. Even its water park rides. At a height of more than 81 feet,Schlitterbahn Galveston Island opened Massiv, the world’s tallest water coaster in late June. What, you may ask, are water coasters? As the name suggests, the popular attractions borrow elements of water slides and roller coasters (and take some inspiration from log flumes as well).

Riders in one- or multi-passenger rafts careen around water slide-like tracks. Blasts of water propel the vehicles through uphill sections, while gravity takes care of the rest. Like a roller coaster, passengers experience G-force-induced thrills including “airtime,” the sensation of rising out of your seat, as the rafts crest a hill. Unlike a roller coaster which typically includes a mechanical lift hill, riders have to tote themselves – and for Massiv passengers, their rafts – up to the highest point of the attraction. At Schlitterbahn Galveston Island, that means schlepping ride vehicles up 123 steps, or over 81 feet.

World’s Tallest Water Coaster – MASSIV – Now Open

By |2016-06-21T20:15:41+00:00June 21st, 2016|News|

Early test riders on the first drop of MASSIV.June 22, 2016 —Schlitterbahn Galveston Island’s newest ride, MASSIV, opened today in Galveston, Texas.

MASSIV (pronounced MASS- EVE, the name is the German word for “massive”) is 81 feet and 6 ¾ inches tall, and is a state of the art water coaster. It has several innovations including a “no-net” design that maintains safety while giving riders a view of the ride experience.  MASSIV features three uphill sections, a series of twists and turns, and a triple drop finale. Guinness World Records declared MASSIV the World’s Tallest Water Coaster on June 16th.

Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark has been recognized as the World’s Best Indoor Waterpark eight consecutive years in a row by Amusement Today and park staff are celebrating their 10th summer of fun. “MASSIV will be the marque ride for our park,” said Schlitterbahn Galveston Island General Manager Ron Sutula. “Having a record-breaking ride is a great addition to Galveston and the perfect fit for our 10th anniversary. Best of all, MASSIV is the kind of ride that will appeal to a wide range of guests, something we are always looking for in our attractions.”

MASSIV was designed and built collaboratively with WhiteWater Attractions, the company licensed to build uphill water coasters using Schlitterbahn’s design developed 22 years ago. “The initial concept for MASSIV was sketched in a meeting with the Galveston team with the goal to create the world’s tallest water coaster. Off to the drawing board I went to design an exceptionally tall water coaster into a very narrow space while balancing g-forces, ride dynamics, and velocities to produce the most exhilarating experience possible. What we’ve achieved is a ride with monstrous thrills and a great story,” comments Emily Colombo, Lead Designer, WhiteWater.

MASSIV FAQ

What is a water coaster?

A water coaster is a water ride that has multiple uphill sections, uses a ride vehicle (boat, tube, or raft), and has other ride elements (spirals, fish ladders, water screens, etc.) to deliver a thrilling and fun filled ride.

Why build this ride at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island

Our park is turning 10 this year and we decided we needed a really big present!

So, what kind of monster is it?

All we know is we have evidence of several claw marks throughout the park and our maintenance team swears they have the feeling that something ginormous is watching them.

What is a water coaster?

A water coaster is a water ride that has multiple uphill sections, uses a ride vehicle (boat, tube, or raft), and has other ride elements (spirals, fish ladders, water screens, etc.) to deliver a thrilling and fun filled ride. (BTW, here is an infographic on the types of waterslides)

How many riders can ride? Will there be weight and height requirements?

MASSIV is designed as a shared experience ride (1-2 riders), so guests who wouldn’t ride alone can scream in the ear of someone they like. Or don’t like.

Rides this massive always have some requirements; single and double riders will need to be at least 48 inches tall. The maximum combined weight of riders is 400 pounds, the maximum for single riders is 300 pounds.

Is there an elevator?

No elevator, no conveyor. Riders will carry a tube to the top of the 123 stairs.

Who was the first one to ride it?

Our park GM, Ron Sutula, has ridden it during testing, along with a few other brave staff members. Every ride we create undergoes rigorous testing.

When will the ride open to the public?

Our opening date will be announced very soon.

So I get to the top and change my mind. What then?

If you decide to walk back down, you will have completed a walk of 246 steps. Woo hoo! Free exercise!

Is this a ride for everyone?

MASSIV is a shared experience ride, which gives it much wider appeal. People who would never ride something this big, will ride with a friend or family member. But it may be too massive for some folks.

MASSIV POV – World’s Tallest Water Coaster

By |2016-04-15T08:24:32+00:00April 15th, 2016|Galveston Island, Releases|

In anticipation of the opening of the world’s tallest water coaster, MASSIV, park officials at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island released a computer generated ride video and teaser video. The ride video, which is based on detailed CAD drawings of the actual ride as well as photos of the Galveston park, provides a guest’s perspective of what riding the world’s tallest water coaster will be like – minus the refreshing splashes of water.

“We can’t wait to ride MASSIV,” said Ron Sutula, Schlitterbahn Galveston’s general manager. “This ride video is the closest we can get until we open the ride in early June.”

MASSIV will have four uphill sections, an enclosed tunnel section, translucent turn, and triple drop finale. At 926 feet long, it’ll be the longest slide at Schlitterbahn Galveston. The official height will be revealed next month. Both the ride video and teaser are available on Youtube.

Schlitterbahn Announces MASSIV — the Tallest Water Coaster in the World

By |2016-02-04T08:00:22+00:00February 4th, 2016|Galveston Island, Releases|

Schlitterbahn Announces MASSIV —

the Tallest Water Coaster in the World

Record-breaking water coaster will be built at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island

Galveston, TX February 4, 2016 — First it was the longest river ride, then the longest torrent (action) river ride, then the tallest waterslide. Now, Schlitterbahn is building the world’s tallest water coaster and putting it in the award-winning Schlitterbahn Waterpark on Galveston Island.

Called MASSIV, the German word for massive, the water coaster will be in place in time for the waterpark’s 10th Anniversary celebration this summer. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island is home to more thrill rides than any other Schlitterbahn Waterpark, making it the perfect home for this record-breaking ride.

Not only will MASSIV be the tallest water coaster in the world, but it will also have a number of other innovations:

  • A translucent section that will make riders visible from the river below.
  • Four uphill sections, with six blaster jets.
  • A triple-drop ending into a landing pool – a never-done-before thrilling finale to the ride.

The exact height of the water coaster will be announced later this spring.

MASSIV utilizes Master Blaster technology, which was invented 22 years ago by Schlitterbahn’s Wizard of Water, Jeff Henry. This technology was licensed to WhiteWater West, which is the company constructing MASSIV.

“We are thrilled to be bringing this iconic ride to Galveston Island,” said Ron Sutula, General Manager for Schlitterbahn Galveston Island. “It’s a massive anniversary present to all our guests, and is going to be a blast to ride!”

Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island has won numerous awards, including the world’s best indoor waterpark for eight straight years from theme and waterpark enthusiasts worldwide. MASSIV will be twice as long as any waterslide in the park and the tallest slide.

New Multi-Million Dollar Ride Opens at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island

By |2019-06-07T20:17:34+00:00June 7th, 2019|Releases|

New Multi-Million Dollar Ride Opens at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island

Infinity Racer Opened in Galveston

Galveston, TX. June 7, 2019 — Retired Astronaut Colonel Terry Virts calls it the “best ride ever!” at today’s opening of Infinity Racers. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island’s new multi-million dollar set of slides, Infinity Racers, had their media debut to the public. These out of this world pair of space-themed, racing head-first mat slides are a whopping eight stories tall and as long as three space stations. Built by WhiteWater West and Schlitterbahn, Infinity Racers delivers a fun, only one in the world, water slide experience. Both of the racing slides are nearly fully enclosed the entire time (except for the loading and splash zones) with multi-colored fiberglass that creates unique lighting effects inside each slide.

« 1 of 2 »

Schlitterbahn is dedicating the slides in honor of the men and women of NASA and the Johnson Space Center, who have inspired the world to reach for the stars. The water slide is opening to the public on Saturday, in time to be part of the national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing.

(Fact sheet on the ride available here)

The interior of each slide delivers a unique experience – one of the slides, designated Orbiter, features circles of multi-colored fiberglass in different sections of the ride while the other, Galaxy, features dashes of multi-colored fiberglass.

B-roll available here

Engineers took full advantage of the existing tall tower to maximize slide time for guests. Riders will slide head-first on mats, racing along enclosed twists and turns over the park’s river system and cabana village until they slide down to the splash zone at the base eight stories below. Part dark ride, the slides are unusual in that most dark rides are not head first slides.

Infinity Racers is now part of an impressive collection of thrill slides including Screaming Serpents (a twisting body slide), the Cliff Hanger (a steep body slide) and  MASSIV, the World’s Tallest Water Coaster.
