ABOUT SCHLITTERBAHN SOUTH PADRE ISLAND
Four Water Coasters and Floating Queues!
Never get out of your tube at Schlitterbahn South Padre. Thanks to an award-winning innovation called Transportainment, waiting for your turn in line has never been so relaxing. Three of the park’s four uphill water coasters feature a floating queue line, allowing guests to stay cool while getting ready for the fun rides ahead.
Schlitterbahn South Padre also has an Instagram worthy sandcastle water feature with a giant water bucket splash zone and great kids slides and interactive water features.
The Rio Aventura is our park-wide river system that interconnects all areas of the park with sections of rapids and slow floats under cascading waterfalls.
South Padre’s Best Zip Line – The Soaring Eagle!
Want a bird’s eye view while soaring over the park? For a small charge, waterpark guests can glide more than 100 feet in the air on a two-person gondola for ¼ of a mile. The Soaring Eagle is the best way to take your waterpark experience to new heights with breathtaking views of the beaches, Gulf of Mexico and the waterpark!
Experience the thrill of exploring marine life in a controlled environment. Sea Trek is the world’s premier underwater helmet diving experience. Imagine walking in zero gravity while surrounded by incredible aquatic life. Snorkeling is also available in Sea Trek! Open seasonally at the outdoor waterpark and available for a nominal fee.
Shrimp Haus Restaurant: Shrimp Haus Website
One of the island’s signature restaurants, the Shrimp Haus, is adjacent to the waterpark and is open year-round with beach-to-bay views. The full-service indoor/outdoor restaurant features a wide variety of unique shrimp dishes, plus classics ranging from steaks to an all you can eat salad bar to the signature Fried Ice Cream. Families have a front row seat from terraces overlooking the park’s Boogie Bahn surf machine.
The Seaside Grill is located on the resort portion of the property and open year-round (weather permitting). Located beachfront and open to the public, the Seaside Grill features a wide array of fresh offerings perfect for any budget. Guests enjoy the island breeze while soaking in the atmosphere and view of the beach and gulf.
Mr. Bob and Miss Billye, our founders, were committed to creating a place where families could gather. So there are a few things that Schlitterbahn focuses on which can be summed up as: No nickel and dime pricing, provide places to linger, and safety first. We don’t charge for parking or tubes and let people bring in a picnic (no nickel and dime pricing), we have 700 picnic tables (places to linger), and we keep our pools and rivers shallow and have the best training program for our lifeguards (safety).
Schlitterbahn supports over 700 charities around the state and around the country each year through generous ticket and lodging contributions. In addition, Schlitterbahn supports literacy through our Waves of Pages program where we work with elementary school librarians to reward reading. Schlitterbahn also has a number of Charities of Choice including the Sunshine Kids, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Communities in Schools, Colin’s Hope, and our staff family volunteers for our local food bank, various races, and special events in our community.
Schlitterbahn’s commitment to the environment is long-standing. From the way the original park was designed to flow among trees, to the commitment to water conservation (98% of the water is recycled through filtration), to using elements from the U.S.S. Pope, a decommissioned troop carrier, Schlitterbahn believes in sustainability. Our parks and resorts utilize a great deal of Loblolly Pine – all of which was saved from the chipper after the devastating Bastrop Complex Fire. We also use reclaimed ropes, ship elements, and even scrap from the building process to theme our parks.
Innovation in South Padre
Transportainment® [transportation + sport + entertainment = Transportainment®]
The park features the first installation of the state-of-the-art, award-winning, Transportainment® river system that transports guests around the park on water. The attraction is designed to combine the elements of transportation, sport, and entertainment while minimizing the time park guests spend standing in lines.
The technology has earned the industry’s highest innovation awards including: International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions [IAAPA] Best New Waterpark Product; IAAPA Impact Award; World Waterpark Association Industry Leadership & Innovation Award; and the THEA Outstanding Achievement Award from the Themed Entertainment Association. Check out the full list of our awards!
Schlitterbahn, which means “slippery road” in German, opened in New Braunfels Texas by the Henry family in 1979 with four water slides starting from a German-style tower. The tower was patterned after the Bergfried Guard Tower at Solms Castle in Braunfels, Germany – home of the original settlers of New Braunfels. The Henry family added the tower and the slides on a hill next to their resort, known back then as Landa Resort. The outdoor waterpark in South Padre opened in 2001 and the resort and indoor waterpark opened in 2011.
The Henry family has continued to innovate, creating new ways to have fun with water that are imitated throughout the industry. More History.
Free Parking and Picnics: At Schlitterbahn parking is free for everyone. Schlitterbahn guests can bring a picnic from home (no glass or alcohol please). There is no charge for tubes, life vests, or boogie boards.
