World’s Tallest Uphill Water Coaster Named Best New Water Park Ride of 2016
MASSIV, named the best new waterpark ride in the world by theme park enthusiasts, was declared by Guinness World Records as the tallest Water Coaster in the World. At 81 feet, 6 and ¾ inches tall, MASSIV packs in the thrills with multiple uphill and sections, a translucent turn, and first ever triple drop finale. Built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Galveston park, it’s already a fan favorite. Why MASSIV? It’s the German word for massive and is pronounced “mass – EVE.”
Schlitterbahn Galveston Indoor Waterpark, Voted Best Indoor Waterpark by Theme Park Enthusiasts for eight years. Schlitterbahn Galveston Waterpark is where Texas keeps summer alive nearly all year. In addition to being an excellent and thrilling destination for summer fun; it opens early for Spring Break and the indoor waterpark stays open through the New Year. How do we do it? Convertible roof technology.
The Wasserfest area of Schlitterbahn Galveston Waterpark, voted the World’s Best Indoor Waterpark for years, transforms to create an indoor waterpark retreat for guests year round.
The 70,000 square-foot indoor waterpark with the state’s longest indoor river, offers more than a dozen heated water adventures including four tube slides, three speed slides, three kids’ activity areas containing a variety of children’s water elements and pint-sized slides, a secluded beach, a heated pool, a man-made surfing wave, and the Torrent® tidal wave river.
Featuring the Island’s first Zip Line: The Soaring Eagle!
Want a bird’s eye view while soaring over the park? For a small charge, waterpark guests glide more than 100 feet in the air at 30 mph on a two-person gondola for ¼ of a mile. It’s the best way to take the waterpark experience to new heights!
Mr. Bob and Miss Billye, our founders, were committed to creating a place where families could gather. So there are a few things that Schlitterbahn focuses on which can be summed up as: No nickel and dime pricing, provide places to linger, and safety first. We don’t charge for parking or tubes and let people bring in a picnic (no nickel and dime pricing), we have 700 picnic tables (places to linger), and we keep our pools and rivers shallow and have the best training program for our lifeguards (safety).
Now owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company.

Schlitterbahn is a place of firsts: MASSIV, the tallest uphill water coaster. The first inland surfing ride. The longest indoor river in Texas. The first swim-up bar (we think). The first water playgrounds with soft surfaces (our fav is Wasserfest Kid’s area).
Schlitterbahn supports over 700 charities around the state and around the country each year through generous ticket and lodging contributions. In addition, Schlitterbahn supports literacy through our Waves of Pages program where we work with elementary school librarians to reward reading. Schlitterbahn also has a number of Charities of Choice including the Sunshine Kids, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and various races, and special events in our community.
Schlitterbahn’s commitment to the environment is long-standing. From the way the original park was designed to flow among trees, to the commitment to water conservation (98% of the water is recycled through filtration), to maintaining recycling containers throughout the parks, Schlitterbahn believes in sustainability. Our parks and resorts utilize a great deal of Loblolly Pine – all of which was saved from the chipper after the devastating Bastrop Complex Fire. We also use reclaimed ropes, ship elements, and even scrap from the building process to theme our parks.
The unique character of the park has led amusement park fans to vote Schlitterbahn Galveston’s Indoor Waterpark the “World’s Best Indoor Waterpark” eight straight years. The park’s eight-story MASSIV Uphill Water Coaster has been voted the “World’s Best New Waterpark Ride.” Check out the full list of our awards!
Schlitterbahn, which means “slippery road” in German, opened by the Henry family in 1979 with four water slides starting from a German-style tower. The tower was patterned after the Bergfried Guard Tower at Solms Castle in Braunfels, Germany – home of the original settlers of New Braunfels. The founding members of the Henry family added the tower and the slides on a hill next to their resort, known back then as Landa Resort. Schlitterbahn Galveston is now owned and operated by Cedar Fair.

Schlitterbahn has expanded the number of available cabanas (we like to call them caBAHNas). Galveston’s premium two-story cabanas, which were invented at our waterpark, create a unique and relaxing experience. Guests enjoy a common gathering area for their party and experience private seating, lounge chairs, catering, tableside service, dedicated lockers, and hammocks – these cabanas can also accommodate regular and large groups.
