(New Braunfels, Texas March 22, 2017 ) This year Schlitterbahn celebrates a fifty-year tradition of providing great river-based family fun. Bob and Billye Henry moved their three children to New Braunfels to take over a small resort on the banks of the Comal River on Labor Day of 1966, kicking off a family business that would, in time, grow into Schlitterbahn. A gallery of historic photos are now available.
“My parent’s goal was to have their own business where our family could work together,” noted Gary Henry, CEO of Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts. “It’s a goal they more than met over the years.”
Now, fifty years later, the family has grown the small resort into a company with a total of three resorts, two indoor waterparks, five outdoor waterparks, two full-service restaurants and a country club — all focused on providing family entertainment.
To celebrate the family business’ golden anniversary, Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts will kick off with a celebration splash. For the first time the summer season opening day will feature a live concert with the Spazmatics. The concert on April 29th will take place in the flagship park in New Braunfels and will be free for all waterpark and resort guests.
The 2017 season will be the first full of operation for the World’s Tallest Water Coaster, MASSIV at Schlitterbahn Galveston. MASSIV has already won multiple awards for “best new waterpark ride” and innovation from waterpark fans around the world. The water coaster was an instant hit when it debuted mid season in 2016.
The core idea behind Schlitterbahn hasn’t changed in 50 years – providing an environment for families and friends to spend time together. “We still offer free parking and let people bring in an ice chest full of food and drinks for free,” said Henry. “It’s a tradition of making fun affordable for families that my parents started and one we continue to this day.”
Season passes for all parks are on sale, for more information visit Schlitterbahn.com.
